Cathedral Church of St John The Devine, NYC
12.12.03 - 28.02.04

This was CUBE's first New York show and part of its fifth birthday celebrations, which also included exhibitions in Manchester and Liverpool.

Dubowitz's Three Sanctuaries installation, displayed in the Cathedral Church of St John The Divine, New York, comprised sixteen large-scale industrial lightboxes showcasing images of three derelict religious buildings:

* The Victorian Gorton monastery in Manchester, Northwest England

* The Renaissance convent in San Gimignano, Italy, which was until recently a high security prison

* The abandoned modernist Seminary in Cardross, west of Scotland, UK.

The large scale format of the light boxes beautifully disseminates the enclosed subject matter, evoking the presence of those now absent, and in doing so ennobling these extraordinary spaces, all now, thankfully, on the cusp of regeneration.
